Your next step
At the Pavilion, we want to help people explore a future in the arts. We’re particularly keen to support young people taking their first steps, and we welcome enquiries from people of all ages and backgrounds. You don’t have to be a performer to belong here.
Still at school or college? Start with what you enjoy: technology, making things, organising, numbers or helping people. Each can lead to a different part of the arts.
Internships, volunteering and creative activities can help you understand how theatre works, build confidence and discover the kind of work you’d like to pursue.
Thinking about a career change? Experience in customer service, administration, finance, teaching or practical work can be valuable in an arts organisation too.
More than the spotlight
These are some of the areas you could explore across theatre and the arts. They describe career paths and ways to contribute; current opportunities at the Pavilion are listed below.
Welcome audiences, check tickets and help people enjoy their visit. A great area to explore if you enjoy working with people and keeping things running smoothly.
Help audiences hear every word and note. Sound work can involve microphones, mixing desks, playback and working closely with performers and the production team.
Use light to create atmosphere and tell a story. Roles span lighting design, preparing equipment, programming a lighting desk and operating cues during a show.
Bring people, timings and backstage details together. Stage managers support rehearsals, organise props and coordinate the cues and activity that keep a performance on track.
Help create the characters an audience sees. Explore costume sourcing and making, fittings, repairs, wardrobe organisation and helping performers with changes.
Keep a busy arts organisation organised. Administration involves enquiries, schedules, records and communication with the many people who make theatre happen.
Connect audiences with live events. Help with ticket sales, bookings and customer questions, combining people skills with accuracy and confidence using booking systems.
Put a head for numbers to work in the arts. Finance roles support budgets, invoices, payments and reporting, helping a theatre plan ahead and use its resources well.
Help turn an idea into a live show. Production assistants, coordinators and managers support planning, people, resources and the practical work of bringing everything together.
Help others discover their creativity. This area includes supporting workshops, youth theatre and community projects, with communication, planning and inclusive practice at its heart.
Share your time and explore theatre as part of a team. Volunteering can be a way to meet people, build confidence and discover which areas interest you.

Case study · Summer 2026
This summer, our first two interns began with a week of work experience at the Pavilion. They then interviewed for production assistant roles on Into the Woods and both joined the production team.
They worked across most theatre disciplines, lending a hand in all sorts of ways — including operating spotlights during the show! It was a chance to discover how the different parts of a production fit together and contribute to a live performance.
The experience was a real success, and both interns loved it. From an initial week of work experience to being part of the production team, their journey shows where a first step into theatre can lead.
